You'll Never Walk Alone Lyrics - Carousel - Rodgers Hammerstein

There are so many beautiful songs about walking.

One of the most encouraging songs for those going through difficult times is “You’ll Never Walk Alone” written by Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein.  The song was written for the stage musical “Carousel”  but the 1956 movie adaptation of “Carousel” featuring Gordon McRae and Shirley Jones is better known than the stage production.

“You’ll Never Walk Alone”is sung twice in the movie. Below is the last scene in Carousel.

Rodgers and Hammerstein were an incredible musical team in the golden age of musical theatre.  Hammerstein wrote lyrics while Rodgers composed the music.

They had a huge influence on Hollywood in their time with their combination of music, drama and dance.

Oklahoma, South Pacific, The King and I and the Sound of Music along with Carousel were considered their best productions. For their years of collaboration, Rodgers & Hammerstein won 34 Tony Awards, 15 Academy Awards and 2 Grammy Awards.

Many critics consider them the best musical team of all time.

Even though Carousel is a tragedy . . . one of the most hopeful songs is “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” It is a song of inspiration and hope.

The song has withstood the test of time because it is a classic.  Through the years, it has been sung by classical, contemporary, rock and country singers including Alicia Keys, Barbra Streisand, Celtic Woman, Dionne Warwick, Doris Day, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, Judy Garland, Lee Greenwood, Louis Armstrong, Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks, Mahalia Jackson, Patti LaBelle, Pink Floyd, Ray Charles and the Righteous Brothers.

Here are the lyrics to You’ll Never Walk Alone

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don’t be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
There’s a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of the lark

Walk on, through the wind
Walk on, through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone

You’ll never walk alone
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone
