Steve Vaught, Fat Man Walking, Goes International
Steve Vaught, also known as the fat man walking has become an international figure. Media from Europe, South America and Asia have all taken an interest in Steve's walk.
The BBC has referred to Steve as a "counter-culture American icon." People from all over Europe and as far away as Australia are following Steve Vaught's journey. Even an on-line newspaper from Africa is covering the fat man's walk.
Steve is now in rural New Jersey, yes there are parts of New Jersey that are still considered to be "country". As of today, May 5 (2006), he still has about 65 miles to go and will have to push hard to make it into the city on time.
There is some talk of Steve Vaught doing smaller walks in different cities around the world. He has expressed interest in doing 5k or 10k motivational walks to help get obese people walking and started their own journeys.
As Steve Vaught nears the completion of his walk he is soliciting people to join him on his walk into Manhattan. He has revised his plans and will enter New York on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at 5:30. Steve Vaught will be crossing into New York from New Jersey on the George Washington Bridge. A press conference will be held at the end of the bridge.
Steve Vaught will spend the night in Manhattan and will appear on the Today show for his first post walk interview.
If you are interested in joining Steve, send him an e-mail so you can receive information on the meeting place and time for the walk into the city.
The fat man walking will live on in a book Steve Vaught is planning to write about his cross country tip.
