Fat Man Walking – Steve Vaught Heads to the Gym
Steve Vaught, also known as the Fat Man Walking made it as far as Englewood, Ohio before deciding it was time to head to the gym. A message on his web-site says that Steve will be off the road for 21 days while he goes to the gym to work on upper body development, portion control and better physical conditioning under the direction of a trainer.
What is the reason for the break? Despite all his walking the fat man walking is, well, still fat, especially around the middle. Steve recognizes that physical fitness is a result of more than just cardio and has taken time off to focus on total fitness and diet. Many of us have found that you need to include different activities in your fitness plans to continue to see the benefits.
The fat man walking has developed a loyal following with the media tracking his every move. He has appeared on numerous national TV shows, been the topic of articles in newspapers and now has a deal to write a book.
According to Steve Vaught, "Visual impact is everything, if I get to New York and I'm round in the middle, people are going to say: What the hell?"
During his break from walking, Vaught is working out three hours a day doing cardio, yoga and martial arts and walking backward in a nearby park. He is also eating only prepared meals. Both the trainer's time and the meals have been donated.
Vaught 40, has fought depression for much of his life. Sixteen years ago he served 10 days in jail after killing an elderly couple who crossed an intersection in front of his car. This accident contributed to Vaught's deteriorating self-confidence and his depression.
Steve Vaught's relationship with his wife, April has deteriorated since the beginning of his journey. "This walk has caused huge changes in the both of us," Vaught said. "It's been just as much a journey for her as for me. Along the way, we discovered that we may not be as compatible as we thought we were. Family happiness is of paramount concern. But the question now is whether it's best for the family if April and I are together or not together."
"This was always a journey for the entire family, and we signed up for wherever it took us, and this is where it's taken us," April Vaught said.
Steve Vaught has lost about 100 pounds since the beginning of his walk. He has been walking between 11 and 14 hours a day. The fat man walking started his walk outside of San Diego in April 2005 and plans to end his walk in New York City this April.
The Fat Man Walking plans to finally walk into New York City in April, one year after he set off on his journey and walk live on to NBC's "Today" show in Rockefeller Center.
