Losing Weight Walking to Starbucks

One of the best ways to get your daily walk while burning calories is to have somewhere you need or want to go and is close enough that you can walk there.

I used to walk to my Starbucks several times a week until the unthinkable happened – they closed my Starbucks.

I not only lost the one place I could walk to but I lost a community of friends.  Okay, maybe they were not true friends but they were people I saw several days a week and knew well enough to engage in a little banter with when I saw them.

Since I work from home I like to go to Starbucks in the middle or end of the day.  Living in Atlanta we only have a few independently owned coffee houses, Starbucks is pretty much the only game in town.  Unlike many people who actually work at Starbucks, I prefer to work at home and relax at Starbucks while I am getting my caffeine fix.

After my Starbucks was closed I had to start frequenting one that was far enough away that I have no option but to drive.  So, I scouted out several Starbucks and finally found one that is in a large shopping area.  It is not in a mall and is a standalone building, but it is surrounded by a very large parking area.

I have started driving to Starbucks and walking at least one circuit of the parking lot.  Most often I walk 2 or 3 times around the parking lot which is a respectable 1.5 to 2 miles.

I walk past the Copper Pig glancing in the windows (there is no stopping since my goal is to get some cardio in) and the blackboard advertising the daily specials at the Trattoria Carbonara (definitely no stopping there).  I see the artwork displayed at the Purple Hippo Art Studio.  I may wander over to the old Spruill Farmhouse one of the few older structures in Dunwoody.   Sometimes I even take Jaycee since she loves both walking and riding in the car.

Think about places you go everyday or several times a week and consider if you can walk there.  If you can’t walk there, is there a place near your destination where you can walk.

Making myself walk before I get a Starbucks helps me enjoy my tall Mocha Frappuccino Light (12 oz is only 125 Calories).

Hey, great advice! They closed my Starbucks too (booo). I never thought about walking around the parking lot before I go in to get my coffee. Maybe, it will not only help me burn calories, but by the time I get in there I may be motivated to buy something low cal which will help me lose weight.

In an effort to lose more weight and try to get more exercise I have been trying to walk more places. This past weekend I walked to a couple of garage sales in my neighborhood. Of course, if I had made any big purchases I would have had to go get more car to pick them up.
